Profile

William enjoys a broad civil practice with a particular focus on intellectual property and competition law.

William has considerable experience in handling IP matters. He has appeared in the high-profile copyright case of Neway Music Ltd v Hong Kong Karaoke Licensing Ltd (CT 2/2010) which was a 35-day hearing before the Hong Kong Copyright Tribunal concerning the reasonableness of royalties charged under a karaoke server licensing scheme.

He also has a fast-growing trademarks practice, appearing regularly in the Trade Marks Registry in opposition and revocation proceedings. William also regularly advises overseas and local companies in respect of trademark and passing-off matters. He has appeared in the Court of First Instance in an application for an interlocutory injunction in a passing-off matter.

Patent highlights include appearing in Dyson Technology Ltd & Anor v German Pool Group Ltd & Ors, where he acted for the Defendants in an application for costs apportionment in copyright/patent infringement. He is currently advising on a patent infringement action and a breach of agreement concerning patent licensing.

In respect of competition law, William is currently involved in Taching Petroleum Company Ltd v Meyer Aluminium Ltd (CTA 1/2018) and Shell v Meyer Aluminium Ltd (CAT 2/2018), the first two cases where competition law was raised as a defence after the Competition Ordinance came into effect in December 2015 and which have since been transferred from the Court of First Instance to the Competition Tribunal.

William accepts instructions in accordance with the Code of Conduct of the Hong Kong Bar Association. Should you wish to instruct William, he would be delighted to discuss your requirements and can be reached on email at wt@wsctse.com or by telephone on +852 35763130.
